조선왕조의 마지막 천재화가 오원 장승업 (張承業, 1843-1897). 우리 근대회화의 토대를 이루었으며 호방한 필묵법과 정교한 묘사력으로 생기넘치는 작품을 남겼다. 오원(吾園) 장승업은 단원(檀園) 김홍도와 혜원(蕙園) 신윤복과 함께 조선 화단의 3대 거장으로 일컬어진다. 조선왕조의 쇠망과 일본제국주의, 청나라, 러시아와 같은 서구열강의 침략 속에 비극적으로 몰락해가는 상황에서 장승업은 바로, 500년을 지속해온 문화적 토양을 바탕으로 조선왕조가 마지막 빛을 발하듯이 배출한 천재화가이다. 장승업은 죽은 지 1세기가 겨우 지난 인물로 조선말기의 최대의 화가였음에도 불구하고 당시 문화예술 방면에 자세한 기록과 보존의 여유가 없었을 시대적 배경으로 인해 그에 대한 기록은 별로 많지 않다.

그림에 취한 신선, 불꽃같은 천재화가 오원 장승업
1850년대, 청계천 거지소굴 근처에서 거지패들에게 죽도록 맞고있던 어린 '승업' 을 '김병문' 이 구해주고 승업은 맞은 내력을 설명하며 김선비에게 그림을 그려보인다.
세도정치에 편승하지 않고 새로운 세상을 꿈꾸던 김선비. 거칠지만 비범한 승업의 실력을 눈여겨 본다.
5년만에 재회한 승업을 엘리트이자 역관 '이응헌' 에게 소개하는데...
