[줄거리]
1776년 미국 사우스캐롤라이나. 영국과 프랑스 간의 식민지 쟁탈전에 참전해 ‘늪 속의 여우’라 불리며 프랑스군과 인디언을 공포에 떨게 했던 전쟁영웅 ‘벤자민 마틴’은 7명의 자식들을 홀로 키우며 가장 역할에 전념한다. 그런 가운데 벤자민처럼 조국에 충성했던 식민지 개척자들이 영국의 폭압에 맞서 독립전쟁을 시작하고, 북부에서 비롯된 독립혁명의 불길이 남쪽으로 내려온다. 벤자민은 식민지 개척자들의 참전 요구를 받지만, 아이들 때문에 거절한다. 그런데 혈기 왕성한 큰아들 ‘가브리엘’이 독립 투사가 되기를 자처하며 전장으로 향했다가 심각한 부상을 입고 돌아온다. 곧 벤자민의 집을 습격한 영국군의 ‘태빙턴’ 대령은 가브리엘을 교수형에 처하겠다며 엄포를 놓는다. 그 과정에서 형을 도망치게 하려던 둘째 ‘토마스’가 총에 맞아 사망한다. 그토록 지키려고 했던 가정이 삽시간에 전쟁의 소용돌이에 휘말리자 벤자민은 사랑하는 아이들을 지키기 위해서 총을 잡는데…
