좋은 음악이란 어떤 음악일까? 음악에 관하여 글을 쓰다 보면 가장 본질적인 부분에 1차적으로 막히고, 그것을 어떻게 표현해야 사람들이 좀 더 들어볼지에 2차적인 고민이 생긴다. 그래서 이 EP를 처음 매체에 소개할 때에는 ‘애플 광고 음악’에 빗대어 설명을 했다. 애플이 자사의 제품 광고에서 쓰는 음악들은 대부분 다이나믹이 있으면서도 깔끔한, 너무 많은 소리의 편성을 지니고 있지 않으면서도 브라스 사운드나 전자음악 구성의 브레이크가 시쳇말로 ‘꽂히는’ 그런 음악의 특성을 언급하며 오늘 소개할 Mesani의 음악 역시 그러한 면모를 지니고 있다는 점을 언급했다. 이미 힙합, 알앤비 그리고 전자음악은 절묘하게 섞인 지 벌써 긴 시간을 지니게 되었고, 그러한 결의 음악을 좋아하는 팬들도 확실하게 존재한다. 이미 메사니라는 음악가를 좋아하는 이들도 있지만, 나는 소울풀하면서도 세련된 이 음악이 더 많은 이에게 닿았으면 한다.
이번 Vinyl은 메사니의 EP 앨범 [Jungle], 그리고 그 전후로 발표한 세 곡의 싱글이 담겨 있다. 우선 첫 면에 담긴 EP부터 설명하면, 당시도 그랬지만 여전히 브리티쉬 소울을 연상시키는 세련된 인상을 받는다. 작품은 브리티쉬 소울 특유의 구성, 그러니까 소울풀한 보컬이 훌륭하게 중심을 잡는 것은 물론 곡을 구성하는 방식에 있어 단순히 화려하고 에픽한 구성으로 승부를 보는 것이 아니라 세밀한 면모와 적절한 완급조절을 담아내는 모습이 강하게 느껴진다. 물론 아티스트의 의도인지 아닌지는 모르겠지만, 메사니는 그런 부분에 있어서 굉장히 탄탄하다. 노래도 잘하고 곡도 잘 쓴다는 것은 좋은 앨범을 만들기 위한 당연한 전제이지만 갖추기에 쉽지 않은 조건이다. no2zcat, Sutt, offthecuff와 같은, 결이 맞으면서도 좋은 실력을 가진 이들과의 호흡 역시 인상적이다. Mesani는 이후 no2zcat과 Sutt의 프로듀서 듀오 프로젝트인 default의 앨범에도 참여했다. 여섯 곡으로 구성된 EP는 쉴 틈 없이 일관된 에너지를 밀고 나가며 듣는 이가 단숨에 전곡을 들을 수 있게 높은 몰입도를 선보인다. 전체적으로 곡의 길이가 짧아서 오히려 더욱 집중도를 끌어오는데, 빠른 템포로 자신의 메시지를 전달하는 “Jungle”을 지나면 “Earthquake”과 “Flame”, “Lungs”까지 훅을 브레이크처럼 쓰면서도 자신이 하고 싶은 이야기나 표현과 적절한 밸런스를 유지한다. 이어지는 “Zoo”와 마지막 곡 “Gehenna”는 앨범의 아웃트로라기보다는 오히려 자신의 정체성을 강하게 표현하면서 이대로 끝이 아니라는 것을 여러모로 암시하는 듯하다.
B면에 등장하는 세 곡의 싱글은 가장 최근에 나온 “Me and myself”부터 “Liquor”, “With me”가 역순으로 담겨 있다. “Me and myself”는 앨범에 담긴 분위기보다 훨씬 소울풀하며, 오히려 재즈 퓨전이나 네오 소울을 연상케 한다. 한층 간결해진 구성 속에서 메사니는 보컬로서의 역량을 훨씬 더 밀도 있게 드러내는데, 음색 자체가 지닌 매력은 물론 보컬로서 선보이는 디테일까지 기술적인 면모가 자신의 바이브를 드러내는 데 적재적소에 쓰이는 것이 인상적이다. 이어지는 “Liquor”와 “With me”는 재즈의 영향을 강하게 받은 곡인데, 앞선 싱글보다 다이나믹한 부분을 강조하지는 않지만, 여전히 곡의 사운드를 구성하는 방식이나 재즈를 중심에 둔 표현이 인상적이다. 온전히 홀로 쓴 곡인 2019년의 곡 “With me”는 오히려 앞의 EP를 인상적으로 들었던 이들에게는 기분 좋은 충격을 줄 것 같다. 단 한 곡이지만 깔끔하면서도 과거로부터 영향을 많이 받은, 소울풀하면서도 얼터너티브한 이런 Mesani의 음악이 나오는 데에 있어 가장 배경이 되는 작품을 엿보는 느낌이다.
무엇보다 가장 좋았던 부분은 역시 이 모든 것이 단순히 흉내나 재현의 수준이 아니라는 점이다. 연상되는 음악은 있지만, 그것이 이 음악을 설명하지는 못한다. 브리티시 소울에 빗대어 작품을 설명하기는 했지만, 그 단어가 이 앨범을 설명하는 메인 키워드라고 보기는 어렵다. 어쩌면 얼터너티브, 퓨처 소울과 같은 키워드가 잘 맞지 않을까 싶다. 최근의 음악적 흐름은 물론 과거를 향한 높은 이해를 바탕으로 한 기반까지, 그는 더 많은 주목을 받아야 하는 음악가다. 그런 점에서 이 LP를 구매한 분들은 어쩌면 좋은 작품이기도 하지만 좋은 아카이브가 될 예정인 이 작품을 얻었다는 점에서 지금의 가치 이상의 것을 얻은 셈이다.
