로우파이 힙합의 재정의, [First Class Tape 2]

뷰티풀 디스코(Beautiful Disco)의 큐레이션 아래 진행되었던 [First Class Tape]은 여러 의미를 남겼다. 첫 번째로는 로우파이 힙합이라고 불리는 음악의 갈래에 해당하는 작품이 단순히 공부할 때나 휴식을 취할 때 배경음악으로 쓰이는 것이 아니라 나름의 치열함과 섬세한, 때로는 기발한 구성을 담고 있음을 의미했다. 더불어 아시아의 음악가들을 한 자리에서 소개하며 아시아 내에서 이러한 무브먼트가 존재함을 알렸다. 의미만 있는 것도 아니었다. 뛰어난 음악가들이 각자의 색채는 물론, 음악적 기량을 선보이며 로우파이 힙합이라고 불리는 음악이 다 똑같지 않다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
두 번째로 선보이는 이번 앨범은 조금은 다른 라인업을 지니고 있다. 한국 음악가 역시 큐레이터인 뷰티풀 디스코를 제외하면 겹치는 음악가는 한 명도 없다. 여기에 이번에는 영미권의 비트메이커들이 참여했고, 실제로 ‘to study/relax to’에 포함되는 음악의 주인공도 있다. 이미 비트메이커가 활동할 수 있는 음악적 기반이 존재하는 북미부터 상대적으로 생소할 수 있는 노르웨이와 핀란드, 이탈리아까지 각자가 있는 지역도 천차만별이다. 그만큼 작품 내 곡 간의 변화와 차이는 전작 못지 않게 풍성하지만 풍성함의 폭은 훨씬 커졌다. 보일러 룸(Boiler Room)부터 스포티파이(Spotify)까지 각종 플랫폼에서 이름을 알린 올 버거 비츠(Ol’ Burger Beats)부터 뉴욕의 유산을 고스란히 계승한 베사 비츠(Vesa Beats)는 물론 뷰티풀 디스코와 호흡을 맞춘 바 있으며 재즈 트럼페터이자 작곡가인 크리스토퍼 에이크렘(Kristoffer Eikrem)까지 해외 라인업이 다양하다. 국내 비트메이커들도 눈 여겨볼 만하다. 이번에는 국내 음악가 대부분이 B면에 모여 있는데, 세련된 작품을 만드는 다울(DAUL)이나 언싱커블(Unsinkable), 모노캣(Monocat)부터 최근 감각적인 무브먼트를 만들어 가는 cjb95까지 여러 이들이 모여 로우파이 힙합에 관한 고민과 나름의 해답을 풀어낸다. 다채로우면서도 세밀한 디테일을 지닌 각 곡 자체의 전개 외에도, 앨범 전체의 구성과 트랙 배치가 지닌 흐름을 잘 파악하여 들어보면 더 많은 것이 들릴 것이며, 감상하는 재미도 더욱 커질 것이다. 여기에 마스터링은 지금까지 뛰어난 작품을 많이 담당해 온 소노리티 마스터링 스튜디오의 이재수 감독이 담당했다. 아트워크는 도미닉 케스터톤(Dominic Kesterton)이 맡아서 더욱 관심을 끈다. 영국을 기반 삼아 세계적으로 활동 중인 도미닉 케스터톤은 뉴욕 타임즈, 잇츠 나이스 댓과 같은 매체부터 애플, 나이키와 같은 큰 클라이언트까지 영역을 가리지 않고 활동하는 일러스트레이터다. 이번 앨범 커버에도 그가 주로 사용해 온 사과와 함께 깔끔하면서도 명쾌한 선과 인상적인 색채를 만날 수 있다.
로우파이 힙합이라는 하나의 주제를 놓고도 다양한 답이 있는데, 묘하게도 교집합이라는 것이 존재하는 듯하다. 그걸 작품으로서 접근하고, 면밀히 관찰하며, 음악을 하는 사람이 아니더라도 탐구의 자세로 들어볼 것을 권하는 감상 방법만큼은 다시 한 번 강조해서 말하고 싶다. 때로는 무심하게 툭툭 던지는 듯해도, 때로는 당사자를 비롯한 소수만이 알아챌 수 있는 디테일과 소리의 구성이 존재한대도 그것은 엄연히 작품으로서 존재하기 위해 세상에 나왔으며 오로지 기능만을 위해 곡이 쓰이지는 않았다. 누가 어떻게 감상하는가에 따라 이 작품의 가치가 달라지기는 하겠지만, 나는 이번에도 작품이라는 측면에 무게를 두는 태도를 고수하고 싶다. 이 작품은 충분히 그럴 만한 가치가 있다.

- Cancellation cannot be made after 12:00p.m. on the next day of the order date, though the shipment hasn’t begun.

4. Delivery Information
1) Shipping Charge
- The international shipping price differs according to the weight and rate set by the shipping company (box weight included).
2) Delivery Date
- Generally, delivery is completed within a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10 business days after payment is completed.
