후쿠오가 완성한 두 번째 새벽도시, [Mild Dawn City Vol. 2]

후쿠오(Hookuo)는 현재 에잇볼타운(8Balltown)에 소속되어 활동하는 아티스트다. 본인의 앨범은 물론 동료 아티스트들의 작품에서도 세션으로 활발하게 활약하는 중이다. 나는 후쿠오의 음악을 즐겨 듣는다. 후쿠오는 늘 내가 원하는 감성을 꽉 찬 소리로 구현해준다. 요즘 내 최애는 ‘그땐 그래야만 했던’과 'Why‘다.
에잇볼타운 활동과 별개로 후쿠오는 비트테잎을 발매한 적이 있다. [Mild Dawn City]는 도시의 새벽을 소리로 그려낸 비트테잎이었다. 이 작품은 로파이(Lo-Fi) 힙합인 동시에 비트메이커의 테잎이었고, 헤비한 샘플링 기반의 음악이면서도 실제 연주가 곳곳에 녹아있는 앨범이었다. 그리고 약 1년여가 지난 지금 후쿠오는 시리즈 속편을 가지고 돌아왔다.
[Mild Dawn City Vol. 2]는 말 그대로 [Mild Dawn City]를 잇는 시리즈 두 번째 비트테잎이다. 이번에는 총 16개의 트랙이 준비됐다. 일단 도시의 새벽을 소리로 그려냈다는 점에서는 전작과 동일하다. 또 자신이 원하는 정확한 질감의 사운드를 얻기 위해 로랜드 SP-404(Roland SP-404) 머신을 자기 방식대로 활용한 것도 전작의 연장선에서 바라볼 수 있다.
[Mild Dawn City Vol. 2]의 특성이라면 보컬 샘플의 비중과 운용이 조금 더 도드라진다는 점이다. ‘iWnaLUVu'와 ’nevercan', 'J1ve'와 ‘woo wha'등 플레이를 누른 후 보컬 샘플이 가미된 트랙이 연달아 흐르는 걸 발견할 수 있다. ’ThazEnough4Me'도 빼놓아선 안 된다. 패티오스틴(Patti Austin)의 ‘That's Enough For Me’를 재창조한 이 트랙은 원곡과 비교하며 듣는 재미가 분명한 곡이다.
사실 보컬 샘플링이라고 하든 칩멍크 소울(Chipmunk Soul)이라고 하든 옛 음악의 보컬 부분을 활용해 재창조한 트랙에 대해서는 다양한 방식의 접근이 가능하다. 비트씬의 비트메이커들 각각의 스타일로도 이야기할 수 있고 메인스트림 힙합의 관점으로 본다면 카니에웨스트(Kanye West), 혹은 르자(Rza)의 프로덕션까지도 거슬러 올라가야 할 것이다.
다시 ’ThazEnough4Me'를 보자. 후쿠오는 원곡의 후렴 보컬 부분을 샘플링했지만 자신의 트랙에서는 이 부분을 후렴 혹은 곡의 중심으로 활용하지 않는다. 대신에 곡을 여는 역할과 닫는 역할을 부여함으로서 새로운 생명을 부여한다. 또한 샘플을 겹겹이 배치하면서 입체감 역시 새롭게 만들어냈다. 후쿠오의 오리지널한 방식이라고 볼 수 있을 것이다.
90년대 초중반 활동했던 알앤비(+뉴잭스윙) 그룹 제이드(Jade)의 히트곡 ‘I Wanna Love You'를 가져온 ‘iWnaLUVu'도 흥미롭다. 제이드의 목소리만을 빌려와 새로운 사운드를 입혀 완전히 다른 곡으로 만들었다. 앞서 말했듯 ‘I Wanna Love You'는 90년대 이후 발매된 현대 알앤비이자 히트곡이기에 현재 힙합을 좋아하는 사람들 중에도 동시대에 접했던 이가 많다. 그리고 그들에게 이 곡은 (동시대에 접하지 못했던 70~80년대 소울과 달리) 노래 통째로 각인되어 있다. ‘iWnaLUVu'는 이런 맥락에서 이색적인 즐거움을 안긴다. “나 그 노래 너무 잘 알지. 그런데 이렇게 바꿨다고?”
이 앨범의 제작자는 나에게 이 앨범이 전작보다 한층 더 멜로우해졌다고 말했다. 무슨 말인지는 알 것 같지만 한편으론 그렇게 정의할 수 있는 작품인가에 대해서도 생각해본다. 각자의 경험과 라이브러리와 삶의 관점에 따라 [Mild Dawn City Vol. 2]는 조금씩 다른 작품으로 마음에 남을 것이다. 나의 경우만 해도 이 작품을 듣고 (아마 후쿠오의 의도에는 없었을) 리틀브라더(Little Brother) 초창기의 나인스원더(9th Wonder)가 떠올랐기 때문이다.
전작과 마찬가지로 이 16개의 비트를 어디서 어떻게 들을지는 각자의 자유다. 하지만 되도록 새벽 즈음에 조용한 방 안에서 턴테이블로 들었으면 좋겠다. 그래야 이 ‘새벽도시’가 비로소 완성될 테니.

2. Exchange/Refund
- Exchange/refund request can be registered through email(or channel talk) within 7 days after delivery.

- If refund is approved after request, then we will guide you in regard to the refund charge and round-trip delivery fees.

1) Shipping Charge
